Zika Virus: Risks& Prevention

Introduction

Zika virus disease is caused by a virus  carried by Aedes mosquitoes and transmitted through bites*.

Key facts:

  • For most people Zika infection is mild with no lasting effects after 2- 7 days of recovering from mild flu like symptoms.
  • Women who might be or could become pregnant should not go to areas with ZIKA virus present and practice safe birth control for at least two months after their visit to a country where Zika virus is present.
  • People with compromised immune systems or nervous system disorders should exercise caution when travelling to affected countries.  This is due to the increased incidence of Gillian Barre Syndrome, a neurological disease, in the most affected North East region of Brazil.

Signs and Symptoms

The symptoms are usually mild and include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis (eye inflammation), muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache.

Potential complications of Zika virus disease

Recently in Brazil, local health authorities have observed an increase in Guillain-Barré syndrome which coincided with Zika virus infections in the general public, as well as an increase in babies born with microcephaly in northeast Brazil.

According to the World Health Organizatio:

” However, more investigation is needed to better understand the relationship between microcephaly in babies and the Zika virus. Other potential causes are also being investigated.”

Other possible causes of microcephaly and Gillian Barre Syndrome have been linked to the excessive use of pesticides in the North East area of Brazil where microcephaly has appeared in newborns.

Diagnosis

Symptoms are confirmed by blood test.

Prevention:

  1. Homeopathic preventative programs** are given to clients travelling to infected areas to boost the immune system for diseases prevalent in those areas as identified by the World Health Organization.
  2. Prevent mosquito bites.
  • wear light colored long sleeves and long pants
  • good mosquito repellent is applied before going outdoors. Please ask Dr Scott for a recommendation.
  • Mosquito’s carrying the Zika virus bite mostly during the day and early evening. Sleep under mosquito nets if you sleep during the day.
  • No retained water on your property e.g. clean gutters.
  • screens on windows and doors
  • for an extended visit purchase mosquito killer machines.
  • burn citronella when sitting outside.

3. Stay inside during fogging procedures.  Request fogging regions and schedules from Canadian consulates. Use recommended Homeopathic medicines to counteract the after effects of spraying.

4. Precautions should be taken in agricultural areas to avoid contact with pesticides.

  • There is evidence Zika can be passed through sexual contact with infected partners which should therefore be avoided by those women who are pregnant or intending to become pregnant.
  • Homeopathic preventative medicine is called Homeopathic Prophylaxis which been used in countries like India, Cuba and Germany to prevent outbreaks of epidemics including dengue fever, scarlet fever, typhoid and cholera for over 200 years.
