As long as our immune system is functioning eff ectively, our bodies are able to handle exposure to a variety of foreign invaders. But when our immune system begins to fail, our susceptibility to a variety of illnesses and diseases increases dramatically.

Viruses, bacteria and other organisms can cause little harm as long as the host’s immune system is intact. Our skin, nasal hairs, saliva and stomach acid provide defense by providing a barrier and/or secreting enzymes that destroy bacteria and viruses. Th e second line of defense is the cellular immune system, comprised of various white blood cells that produce antibodies and other compounds that have been trained to attack and kill viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.

There is no question that it is good to avoid, as much as possible, things that weaken our immune system such as diets high in sugar and processed foods, contaminated air and water, exposure to toxins such as pesticides and harsh cleaning chemicals, and psychological stress.
