Fall is fast approaching

Autumn 2010

Download PDF Version: Autumn2010.pdf

Fall is fast approaching. Soon I will be heading to Winnipeg to help clients ready their immune systems to meet the fall and winter flu season. Last year we managed most cases of fever and flu successfully by using common homeopathic remedies individually selected for each patient. Remember H1N1? For all the fuss, it faded away remarkably fast last year. I did treat several confirmed cases of H1N1 and they responded well to homeopathic treatment with Belladonna being the homeopathic remedy most often prescribed. When one or two remedies stand out, such as Belladonna, as the most widely used medicine for cases within the same pandemic, these remedies are referred to in Homeopathy as Genus Epidemicus. When I see clients this fall, I will recommend a flu treatment kit consisting of this years’ genus epidemicus, as well as specially chosen homeopathic remedies to address your particular susceptibilities. These are unique for each individual. Also recommended is our standard flu prevention kit which year after year is proven to be amazing!

In the news

A few weeks ago, a study was released concerning the prevalence of a toxic chemical BPA (Bisphenol A) used in everything from CDs to all tin cans and until recently, linings of baby bottles. Of all the Canadians’ tested, 95% have above normal levels in their systems with the highest incidence rate being among teens and children.

BPA is carcinogenic and creates hormonal imbalances such as sterility and excessive growth. BPA is only one of a sea of unregulated harmful chemicals we are being exposed to on a regular basis. Our exposure to toxic everyday products from plastic containers, to pesticides on the neighbour’s lawn, to a range of questionable ingredients in the shampoo we use so often has been on my mind for a long time. Recently clients have started being more aware of their family’s exposure to a myriad of chemicals from everyday products and have been asking what to do about it? Many are worried about effects down the road such as cancer and hormonal defects in our children. I remembered a wise older homeopathic doctor telling me 10 years ago about Homotoxicology, a branch of homeopathic medicine that he explained was necessary to detoxify people of the preservatives, chemicals, sugar byproducts, medicines and other toxins . Thank you Dr Sandhar! He explained that the following detoxifiers were necessary to improve health: a blood purifier, a liver detox (because it is the main detoxifier in our bodies), a kidney detox (where we eliminate toxic chemical byproducts such as nitrates and phosphates), as well as two colon cleanses to clean out the byproducts of the inorganic foods products we consume. I have done
a full detoxifing program and am recommending it to my family, friends, and clients. Please send an email if you would like to order a cleansing package.

Essence of ...

Belladonna In the 16th century, Italian women used deadly nightshade to make their eyes sparkle and pupils dilate, hence bella donna, which is Italian for “beautiful woman.” Homeopathic Belladonna has been in use for over 200 years. It was one of the first homeopathic remedies used by Hahnemann (German Physician and founder of Homeopathic medicine) for scarlet fever, after he observed that symptoms of deadly nightshade poisoning closely matched those of scarlet fever. It is now used prophylactically and curatively for infections with similar symptoms such as influenza (eg sore throat and violent headache experienced by several clients with H1N1.)
Belladonna is used to treat complaints of sudden onset such as acute infections and inflammation. Typical symptoms include high fever, dilated pupils, flushed face and throbbing pain, particularly in the head, due to rapid blood circulation to the head. There is often hypersensitivity to light, noise, and touch. There is little thirst, or a craving for sour drinks, flu, tonsillitis, a sore throat, a dry, tickly cough that is made worse by talking, and earache (especially right-side). Symptoms include throbbing pain, a red, hot face but with cold hands and feet.

Belladonna is usually given to people who are generally fit and energetic, but restless and agitated when ill. They are prone to explosive anger, marked by the desire to strike out or even to bite. Other conditions helped by Belladonna include: pounding headaches in which the slightest eye movement intensifies the pain; boils; seizures; labour pain; swollen, red breasts from breastfeeding; cystitis; nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys); and restless sleep. It is often given to children for teething pain and to reduce a high fever.

Belladonna should be used under the guidance of your homoeopathic physician and is not to be used during pregnancy.

What’s new with me?

Some patients have inquired about what I’m up to and how I am. Here’s a bit of a glimpse of what has been keeping me busy.

First, a website is on its way. It is currently in the development phase and will hopefully be up and running in the next few months. Both the site builder and designer are clients who have used Homeopathy extensively themselves and for their families. They are giving of their time and expertise to help create the best site possible so we’d love your input on what you’d like to see on a Dr. Scott Homeopathy Website.
On Thursdays I will be working in a multidisciplinary clinic called the Victoria Community Health Co-op. The co-op team will be made up of five doctors, several psychiatrists, a nurse practitioner, and a compliment of alternative medicine practitioners together in a clinic which is run co-operatively. ‘Co-op’ means that people pay $50 for a lifetime membership and through their vote directly determine what kind of health care they receive and how their health care system is run. The health care navigator on site will help clients determine which health care provider or combination of them is suitable based on their particular health needs
